A critical review of methodology and interpretation of mirror self-recognition research in nonhuman primates

Article Abstract:

Conceptual and methodological issues of mirror self-exploration (MSE) research in nonhuman primates are critically reviewed. It is concluded that mirror-self exploration provides evidence for mirror self-recognition. Inter- and intraspecies differences with regard to presence or absence of mirror self-recognition are not sufficiently clear, and hypotheses to account phylogenetically for the existence of inter- and intraspecies differences can only be advanced when the impact of rearing conditions on mirror-self recognition is further examined.

Early approach preferences of patterns and colours in quail: responses to artificial selection and imprinting

Article Abstract:

Japanese quail were artificially selected for preference between two patterns and two colours, blue and red, and imprinting of chicks affected colour preferences, but not achromatic pattern preferences. The findings held with different types and intensities of genetically selected preferences. The partial change of preference following imprinting indicates that genetic selection and learning interact in the case of colour preferences.

Mosquitofish display differential left- and right-eye use during mirror image scrutiny and predator inspection responses

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the preference for use of the right eye which is shown by the mosquitofish when inspecting a predator. The use of the left eye for exploring the environment is discussed.
