Regional assessment of remote forests and black bear habitat from forest resource surveys

Article Abstract:

A spatially explicit modeling approach using a county-scale remote forest assessment was constructed to identify ideal habitats for black bears in 12 southern states. The approach differentiated between suitable and optimal habitats for the bears. It classified 38.9% of the region's area as suitable habitats and 63.3% as optimal habitats. However, further regional land surveys are encouraged to determine whether additional ranges should be given to black bear populations.

Bat habitat use in White Mountain National Forest

Article Abstract:

Analysis of bat foraging and feeding activity at the White Mountain National Forest showed activities concentrated at upper canopy heights, trails and water body edges. Flight activities were observed active in regenerating and overmature stands of hardwood and softwood forests while feeding remained was most active at the regenerating softwood area. Majority of the bats caught during the experiment were brown bats (Myotis lucifugus).
