Global climate change and terrestrial net primary production

Article Abstract:

Global net primary production patterns (NPP) were estimated for existing climate conditions and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration levels were estimated using a process-based terrestrial ecosystem model. The effects of carbon dioxide doubling and related climate changes were also examined using global climate models. Results revealed that the tropics account for more than 50% of global NPP and that a large part of this takes place in tropical evergreen moist forests. Elevated carbon dioxide was found to be the dominant factor for tropical and dry ecosystems' NPP, while temperature enhancement of nitrogen availability determined NPP increases in moist temperate regions.

Signature of recent climate change in frequencies of natural atmospheric circulation regimes

Article Abstract:

The extent to which recent climate changes is due to anthropogenic forcing or a manifestation of natural climate variability is an important question in the global warming debate. It is argued that spatial patterns of the response to anthropogenic forcing could project mainly onto modes of natural climate variability. Atmospheric circulation data from the Northern Hemisphere has been used to show that recent climate change could be interpreted in terms of changed frequency of occurrence of natural atmospheric circulation regimes.
