Biological response to climate change on a tropical mountain

Article Abstract:

An analysis of patterns of precipitation, air temperatures, stream flow and sea surface temperatures has been used to assess whether changes in species distribution and abundance in highland forests at Monteverde, Costa Rica, are linked with a rise in air temperatures that came after a step-like warming of tropical oceans in 1976. Changes in populations of lizards, birds and anurans are all linked statistically with the same climatic patterns and took place at the same time. This indicates a wide-ranging response to a regional climate change that went over a significant threshold in the late 1980s.

The cloud over Sarawak

Article Abstract:

Forest fires in Indonesia, burning out of control and causing severe atmospheric pollution in the region, have been barely reported by the increasingly insular Western media, but have the potential to cause a large-scale environmental disaster. The catastrophe highlights the lack of regional awareness of the problems caused by economic development and forest mismanagement. The muted international interest in the calamity, especially in developed countries, contrasts starkly with the uproar over minor health problems among fishermen on the US east coast.

Helping western forests heal

Article Abstract:

The poor outlook for the forest ecosystems of the American West is discussed and a framework for ecological restoration treatment is provided. The underlying causes of wildfires must be tackled, and the whole approach to forest and fuel management changed.
