Who needs crystals anyway?

Article Abstract:

Recent advancements in the field of electron cryomicroscopy have resulted in the detection of a new viral capsid fold within the hepatitis B virus core protein. The four-helix bundle within the virus core has been detected at a resolution of 7.4 angstroms. High-resolution three-dimensional maps of the virus-receptor complex were also derived by docking the atomic structures for the virus and for the receptor.

Visualization of a 4-helix bundle in the hepatitis B virus capsid by cryo-electron microscopy

Article Abstract:

Cryo-electron microscopy at a resolution of 9 angstroms reveals that the stem of the hepatitis B virus capsid is a 4-helix bundle. The stem, which protrudes as a spike on the capsid's outer surface, is formed by the pairing of alpha-helical hairpins from both subunits. The individual alpha-helices in parallel bundles have a center-to-center spacing of 10 angstroms, a value similar to other 4-helix bundles.
