A fresh start for Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has appointed a scientist, Kiyoshi Kurokawa, as a special adviser to the cabinet and has announced plans for Innovation 25, a long-term review of Japan's science and technology need until 2025. The new science adviser will have to find ways for getting more scientists involved in contributing to the development of science policy in Tokyo.

Revival in Iran

Article Abstract:

The revival of science in Iran and the dramatic rise in scientific productivity, which has coincided with the relaxing of a stern Islamic regime under reformist president Mohammad Khatami, are discussed. The present president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has taken significant steps to prepare for an expansion of university student numbers and has increased the research funds.
