A glass of carbon dioxide

Article Abstract:

A study shows that when a high-density form of solid C[O.sub.2] is melted and cooled under high-pressure conditions it forms carbonia glass. The findings of the study will be useful for technological applications, has implications for geochemistry and also opens up a new area in solid-state chemistry.

Phonon interpretation of the 'boson peak' in supercooled liquids

Article Abstract:

Phonons, quantized vibrational excitations, are linked with elasticity in crystalline solids such as glass. Discusses the boson peak, the signature of a phase transition, accompanied by graphs.

Metal turned to glass

Article Abstract:

Researchers have made a glass by cooling a pure, monatomic metal. They have provided evidence that a liquid-liquid transition does occur in supercooled germanium.
