A glutathione S-transferase involved in vacuolar transfer encoded by the maize gene Bronze-2

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the role of the corn Bronze-2 gene is involved in the synthesis of glutathione S-transferase and in the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway. The results show that Bronze-2 gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase that has activity in corn, Escherichia coli and transformed Arabidopsis thaliana. Moreover, anthocyanins extracted from corn protoplasts containing the gene product of Bronze-2 are conjugated with glutathione, and that vanadate inhibits the vacuolar accumulation of anthocyanins. The results suggest a biochemical role for Bronze-2 gene product and a common mechanism for vacuolar accumulation of anthocyanins.

UV-B damage amplified by transposons in maize

Article Abstract:

Plants are exports to ultraviolet radiation when absorbing visible light energy for photosynthesis. They receive increasing doses of the harmful UV-B radiation which induces mutagenic DNA lesions. UV-B exposure at 33% ozone depletion is found to activate immobile Mutator (Mu) transposons in maize sperm, amplifying the effects of UV-B exposure. It is thought that plants with large genomes could be particularly susceptible to destabilization, and as plants lack a dedicated germ line, stomatic stem cell mutations can be represented in subsequent gametes.
