A green source of surprise

Article Abstract:

The discovery that the living terrestrial vegetation plants emit methane into the atmosphere is startling because of two reasons, first being, methane emissions occur under normal physiological conditions, in the presence of oxygen and secondly because the estimated emissions are large, constituting 10 - 30% of the annual total of methane entering Earth's atmosphere. The details of the methane-production mechanism are not known.

Methane emissions from terrestrial plants under aerobic conditions

Article Abstract:

Methane is readily formed in situ in terrestrial plants under oxic conditions by a hitherto unrecognized process using stable carbon isotopes. Significant methane emissions from both intact plants and detached leaves were observed during incubation experiments in the laboratory and in the field.

Short-term variations in the oxidizing power of the atmosphere

Article Abstract:

The predominant atmospheric oxidant is the hydroxyl radical which is responsible for removing a wide range of trace gases from the atmosphere including greenhouse gases. It is critical in understanding whether the cleansing properties of the atmosphere are undergoing changes.
