A massive black hole at the centre of the quiescent galaxy M32

Article Abstract:

Many astronomers suspect the presence of a massive black hole in M32, a nearby, quiescent elliptical galaxy. A space-based high-resolution optical spectra of M32 indicate that the stellar velocities near the center of this galaxy are more than those inferred from past ground-based observations. These observations suggest the existence of a black hole at the center of M32 and other quiescent galaxies.

The sharp end of quasars

Article Abstract:

The space density of quasars was 1,000 times higher at redshift (z) of approximately two, that is when the Universe was one-fifth its present age. However, the space density appears to decrease for z > 3, providing enough time for the formation of most of the galaxies. The observed decline cannot be due to the obscuring influence as the result comes from investigating quasars at radio wavelengths.

Energy input from quasars regulates the growth and activity of black holes and their host galaxies

Article Abstract:

A link between the growth of the black holes and their host galaxies, which has indeed been assumed for a number of years, is suggested. Galaxy-galaxy collisions leads to strong inflows that feed gas to the supermassive black hole, thereby powering the quasar and the energy released by the quasar expels enough gas to quench both star formation and further black hole growth.
