A progeroid syndrome in mice is caused by defects in A-type lamins

Article Abstract:

Research characterizes mice carrying an autosomal recessive mutation in the A-type lamins encoding gene. Homozygous mice exhibit defects like reduction in growth rate and death in 4 weeks, pathologies of bone, muscle, and skin consistent with the Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. Data indicate that the gene mutationalso causes nuclear morphology defects and lifespan reduction in fibroblasts leading to premature cell death.

Mice and mitochondria

Article Abstract:

Mitochondria are little pockets of energy within cells, carrying out the important task of converting food into usable energy forms, and they have their own genomes. The mutant mice showed symptoms consistent with accelerated aging such as premature weight loss, hair loss, and reduction in fertility, curvature of the spine and a shortened lifespan.
