A proposed path by which genes common to mammalian X and Y chromosomes evolve to become X inactivated

Article Abstract:

The coevolution of X and Y chromosomes can be explored by studying the similarities and differences among homologous genes in existing species. The epigenetic phenomenon of X inactivation can be investigated using this route. New research investigates the theory that X-Y genes have evolved independently and require dosage compensation on the X chromosome. The study of genes ZFX, RPS4X and SMCX shows that X inactivation is evolved independently and is probably an adaptation to reduced expression of a homologous, Y-linked gene.
