A protein conjugation system essential for autophagy

Article Abstract:

The process of autophagy for the bulk degradation of proteins is crucial for survival during starvation and cell differentiation. 14 autophagy-defective (apg) mutants of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast have been isolated and the autophagic process examined at molecular level. A unique covalent-modification system is found to be necessary for autophagy to occur.

The role of autophagy during the early neonatal starvation period

Article Abstract:

Autophagy, the primary means for the degradation of cytoplasmic constituents within lysosomes is induced by neonates. It is stated that the production of amino acids by autophagic degradation of 'self' proteins, which allows for the maintenance of energy homeostasis, is important for survival during neonatal starvation.

Suppression of basal autophagy in neural cells causes neurodegenerative disease in mice

Article Abstract:

The loss of autophagy causes neurodegeneration even if disease associated mutant proteins is absent. Continuous clearance of diffuse cytosolic proteins through basal autophagy helps prevent the accumulation of abnormal proteins capable of disrupting neural function which finally leads to neurodegeneration.
