Atmospheric CO2 concentration and millennial-scale climate change during the last glacial period

Article Abstract:

Air bubbles which were trapped in polar ice have been analysed and the concentrations of CO2 over various periods have been calculated. Changes in the climate over many thousands of years tend to change the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere. However, CO2 concentrations during rapid climate changes are less certain. Research into CO2 from Greenland and Antarctic ice has been inconclusive. An accurate time scale is required to compare the data from Greenland with the Antarctic and a method has been developed which uses concentrations of atmospheric methane from both the ice samples.

Southern Ocean sea-ice extent, productivity and iron flux over the past eight glacial cycles

Article Abstract:

Continuous chemical proxy data spanning the last eight glacial; cycles (740,000 years) from the Dome C Antarctic ice core are presented, constraining winter sea-ice extent in the Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean biogenic productivity and Patagonian climatic conditions. Maximum sea-ice extent is closely tied to Antarctic temperature on multi-millennial timescales and large glacial-interglacial contrasts in iron deposition reflect strongly changing Patagonian conditions.

Holocene carbon-cycle dynamics based on CO2 trapped in ice at Taylor Dome, Antarctica

Article Abstract:

The global carbon cycle has not been in steady state during the past 11,000 years, shown by a high-resolution ice-core record of atmospheric CO2 concentrations during the Holocene epoch. Changes in terrestrial biomass and sea surface temperatures are a possible cause for the observed millennial-scale changes of atmospheric CO2, following analysis of the CO2 concentration and carbon stable-isotope records.
