A putative flip-flop switch for control of REM sleep

Article Abstract:

A brainstem flip-flop switch is proposed for the control of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which consists of mutually inhibitory REM-off and REM-on areas in the mesopontine tegmentum. The mutually inhibitory interactions of the REM-on and REM-off areas form a flip-flop switch that sharpens state transitions and makes them vulnerable to sudden, unwanted transitions in narcolepsy.

Controlling our errors

Article Abstract:

The Sato-Tate conjecture predicts the probability distribution of the error term occurring in many major problems in number theory. The conjecture is proved for a large group of cases and this achievement is very important as it brings synthetic unity to deep results in quite distinct mathematical fields and the work answers a question of delicate nature.

Added dimensions to grain growth

Article Abstract:

A mathematical model for the growth of grains in two dimensions that has generalized to three and higher dimensions is explored to understand crucial properties of materials. Results suggest that the rate of change of n-dimensional volume is related to n-2-dimensional features of the cell and not to the lower-dimensional ones.
