A pygostyle from a non-avian theropod

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to identify a pygostyle from a non-avian theropod, an oviraptorosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Nemegt Formation of Bugin Tsav, Mongolia. The specimen has most vertebrae, as well as ribs, chevrons, pelvis, tibiae, femora, gastralia, proximal tarsals and fibulae. The pygostyle is a quite straight, tapering co-ossified mass. The short tail and pygostyle of this specimen suggests a fan of elongate tail features in oviraptorosaurs that is more derived than in Caudipteryx.

Quality of the fossil record through time

Article Abstract:

A database of 1,000 morphological and molecular cadograms was compiled and sorted into lineages arising in the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic or Cenozoic. Sample sizes and tree sizes were fairly uniform and the relative congruence of age and clade data showed no clear increase from most ancient to most recent. This provides a more convincing analytical tool, offering independent data on history.
