A role for pheromones in mate choice in a lekking sandfly

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the importance of pheromones in mate choice in the lekking sandfly, Lutzomyia longipalpis. Copulation between virgin female and male lekking sandflies were observed and the quantity of pheromones remaining in the glands of both the mated and unmated males were determined. Results suggest that wing fanning and pheromone production have relative importance for mating success.

Cost of pheromone production in a lekking Drosophila

Article Abstract:

The relation between pheromone production and life span in Drosophila grimshawi, a lekking fruit fly where males deposit phereomones on the lekking arena is investigated. It is shown that the pheromone has multiple functions and that male D. grimshawi appear to adjust their investment in pheromone production in relation to their social environment.

Choosy males in a haplochromic ciclid: first experimental evidence for male mate choice in a lekking species

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether male preference for larger and heavier females exists in a lekking species, the haplochromine cichlid Astatotilapia flaviijosephi. The result reveals that there may be constraints on males in fertilizing multiple females, which compels them to be choosy.
