A second chance for the thymus

Article Abstract:

An overview of the research undertaken by scientists to identify the potential progenitors that enable the development of thymus, the source of the mature T cells that fight many types of infections, is presented. The successful identification of the progenitor cells that give rise to two structures in the thymus, demonstrate the fact that the thymus can continue to develop after birth.

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells sense self-DNA coupled with antimicrobial peptide

Article Abstract:

The antimicrobial peptide LL37 is identified as the key factor that mediates plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) activation is psoriasis, a common autoimmune disease of the skin. The analysis disclosed a fundamental role of an endogenous antimicrobial peptide LL37 in breaking innate tolerance to self-DNA and suggested that this pathway might drive autoimmunity is psoriasis.

Hassall's corpuscles instruct dendritic cells to induce CD4(super +) CD25(super +) regulatory T cells in human thymus

Article Abstract:

Experts reveal that the human Hassall's corpuscles express thymic stromal lymphopoietin. Hassall's corpuscles have a critical role in dendritic-cell-mediated secondary positive selection of medium-to-high affinity self-reactive Tcells, leading to the generation of CD4(super +) CD25(super +) regulatory T cells within the thymus.
