A sensory role for neuronal growth cone filopodia

Article Abstract:

Neuronal growth cone filopodia function independently of their parent growth cones via signal transduction mechanisms which can relay information about the environment back to their parent cone. Filopoda were physically separated from neuronal growth cones of the snail Helisoma and subjected to electric fields and to excitatory neurotransmitters, stimuli that are known to depolarize, raise calcium ion concentration and inhibit growth cone motility. The filopoda were found to respond to these stimuli in much the same way as on intact growth cones showing that they have an independent contractile function.

Superior auditory spatial tuning in conductors

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning a comparison of the auditory localization mechanisms in space which is peripheral in 7 non-musicians, 7 pianists and 7 classical-music conductors. The conductors revealed superior auditory spatial tuning.
