A serine/threonine kinase gene defective in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to identify truncating germline mutations in a gene residing on chromosome 19p in multiple individuals affected by Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), a rare hereditary disease in which those affected are predisposed to benign and malignant tumours of many organ systems. The gene, LKB1, has strong similarities with a cytoplasmic Xenopus serine/threonine protein kinase XEEK1. It has been shown to be the main gene that when mutated is responsible for familial PJS. This is probably the first gene that predisposes to cancer through disabling its encoded kinase activity.

Size and shape

Article Abstract:

DREADCO chemists are experimenting on fibers that will regain their original shape on warming, can be stretched and will retain the new shape after cooling. Garments woven using these fibers will solve the clothing industry's problem of manufacture garments of different sizes. A shop will be able to stock garments of a single size which will be adjusted to all sizes. Since people prefer mixed fabrics, the DREADCO team will devise threads with cotton wound around a synthetic core.

Patterns of somatic mutation in human cancer genomes

Article Abstract:

Sequencing of genes in tumors has revealed varied somatic mutation patterns in cancer cell. While most of somatic mutations were passengers, driver mutations that contribute to manifestation of cancer were found in 120 genes.
