Overproduction in song development: an evolutionary correlate with migration

Article Abstract:

A comparative study of vocal development in males of three subspecies of the white-crowned sparrow shows existence of genetically based differences in the degree of song overproduction during vocal development. Migratory annual cycle is responsible for variation in the degree of song overproduction because two migratory taxa Puget Sound and Oriantha resemble each other, despite being distantly related. Puget Sound would have resembled sister taxa sedentary Nuttalli variety, if recency of common ancestry was the determinant of song development. Song matching between migratory birds is discussed.

The capacity for song memorization varies in populations of the same species

Article Abstract:

Early tutor experience influences the development of singing in the subspecies of white-crowned sparrows. The migratory oriantha subspecies learns significantly more tutor material and produces more song types during vocal rehearsal from a rich tutoring regime. Males of the sedentary nuttalli subspecies learn similar amounts from both rich and lean tutoring regimes. The migratory annual cycle causes uncertainty regarding where a young male will breed for the first time, and this favors the ability to learn and produce more songs.
