Perception of geographical variation in song by male Puget Sound white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis

Article Abstract:

Three playback experiments are conducted to territorial male white-crowned sparrows using both natural and computer-modified stimuli to test which acoustic features of song these birds attend to. Results reveal that the response of male Puget Sound white-crowned sparrows to playback is influenced most by variation in the song's trill.

The timing of song memorization differs in males and females: a new assay for avian vocal learning

Article Abstract:

A new assessment for measuring the timing of song learning in birds is presented and compared with the standard method of measuring the tutoring process and song memorization. The study of song memorization in juvenile female and male white-crowned sparrows shows that the critical phase for song learning differs between the sexes and is shorter in females.
