A substantial amount of hidden magnetic energy in the quiet Sun

Article Abstract:

A three-dimensional radiative transfer modelling of scattering polarization in atomic and molecular lines, which indicates the presence of hidden, mixed-polarity fields on subresolution scales, is reported. A ubiquitous tangled magnetic field with an average strength of approximately 130 G is found after combining this modelling with the observational data.

Astronomy: Glowing embers

Article Abstract:

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are followed by an 'afterglow,' decaying signals at longer wavelengths, but optical afterglows are now being observed at almost the same instant as the GRB. Compares observations from various optical telescopes in Japan and the US with those from the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX. Includes diagram of GRBs.

Refreshed shocks from a gamma-ray burst

Article Abstract:

The gamma-ray burst had two interesting peculiarities, an unusually low-energy output in gamma-rays and a large bump in its after-glow light curve after one-two days. The refreshed shocks after the initial burst produced the observed fluctuations in the early after-glow light curve and explained the low-energy output at early times.
