A troupe of near dwarfs

Article Abstract:

The discovery of faint satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, which are dimmer than some of the Milky Way's star clusters, has introduced some doubt into the general description of the world of galaxies. Numerical simulations have indicated the existence of a swarm of smaller, denser darkness haloes embedded within the general dark halo of the Milky Way, but the faintness of the new discoveries has indicated that they might be the first of a vast population of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies surrounding the Milky Way system.

Universal twists

Article Abstract:

Galaxies have some characteristics, such as spiral arms, warps and lopsidedness, that could be due to gravitational instabilities. These changes could also be due to a twisting halo of dark matter and tidal interactions between galaxies. A significant warp of our Galaxy could be due to a new dwarf galaxy, Sagittarius. Main points of a discussion of the dynamics of disks and the Local Groups of galaxies, held in a conference, are given.

Clumps that survive to tell a tale

Article Abstract:

Helmi and colleagues have shown that around 8% of metal-poor halo stars close to the Sun began life in a single coherent structure, disrupted after the formation of the Milky Way. Lee and colleagues have reinforced the view that the brighter globular cluster of starts in the Milky Way could be the remnant nucleus of a spheroidal dwarf galaxy.
