The lab of last resort

Article Abstract:

The British government's decision to take over management of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) has left many questioning the government's commitment to relevant industrial research. RAL, originally designed as a physics laboratory, is now used for academic research and will soon be the British source of synchrotron radiation. No one doubts the competence of RAL workers, but the lab is likely to use 1/3 of the country's academic research budget. Centralizing so much of the budget in a single lab seems to go against the goal of strengthening ties between research and business.

MPs warn of threat to the science base

Article Abstract:

The UK's House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology, reporting prior to the dissolution of Parliament, has warned that individual government departments are shifting financial burdens for research projects to the research councils and are undermining the UK's science base. In its report on the activities of the Natural Environment Research Council, the committee concludes that the relationship between government departments' individual science and technology expenditures and the science budget should be examined.
