The chemistry of fullerenes

Article Abstract:

Fullerenes undergo different reactions characteristic of alkenes to produce many derivatives of carbon-60 and carbon-70 which are formed by the the sp2-hybridization of carbon. Fullerene interactionshave shown the possibility of adding up to six electrons as well as for exploring Diels-Alder cycloadditions. It has has also been proven that fullerenes with seven-ring members exist in carbon tubules. However, fullerenes with four or five-membered rings have to avoid the formation of double bonds to prevent the occurrence of the Mills-Nixon effect. It has also been shown that the stability of other fullerene derivatives depend on their ability to avoid double bonds.

Make or break with fullerenes

Article Abstract:

The use of carbon allotropes to determine carbon phase transitions and kinetics took a step forward when F. Moshary and colleagues found that high pressure converts the allotrope C60 into a new form of amorphous carbon. This amorphous form has the diamond-like properties of being both very hard and transparent at visible wavelengths. This research may lead to new materials whose hardness and thermal conductivity are comparable to those of cubic diamond.

Coalescence reactions of fullerenes

Article Abstract:

Fullerene molecules are capable of undergoing coalescence reactions. Mass spectrometric measurements of the fullerenes C60 and C70 in the form of hot, dense gas found that these molecules yielded stable higher fullerenes that were multiples of the original molecules' masses. This discovery may lead to a deeper understanding of how fullerenes originate and to better techniques for synthesizing fullerenes and encapsulation compounds.
