A window on the inner Earth

Article Abstract:

The Hawaiian Islands will provide the setting for a new res earch project to uncover the secrets of the Earth's mantle. Researchers hope to find out what causes the 'hot spot' that breaks through the Pacific Plate to create a plume that then gives rise to the islands. Researchers especially want to know whether the hot spot originates in the upper or lower mantle, or perhaps even in the outer core.

The coast road

Article Abstract:

Study of the now-submerged land bridge between Asia and North America is helping determine exactly when people migrated there for the first time. The article describes the methods used to gather core samples, which will be analyzed to discover exactly when the land bridge was in use, and may provide evidence that the migratory route was coastal, and not inland as previously thought.

Wildlife attacks hinder conservation efforts

Article Abstract:

The incidents of wildlife attacks had hindered the work of biologists trying to study and conserve predator species in the American West. However, researchers hope that a detailed study of animal behavior would reduce the accidents and maintain the public support in relation to the conservation of the fiercest predators.
