ATP is a mediator of chemosensory transudation in the central nervous system

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to show that the increase in p(sub CO2) in the arterial blood triggers the immediate release of ATP from three chemosensitive regions located on the ventral surface of the medulla oblongata. The data suggest that ATP, a phylogenetically ancient, unique and simple molecule is widely used in the evolution of afferent systems to mediate distinct forms of sensory transduction not only in the periphery but also within the central nervous system.

Trichomonas hydrogenosomes contain the NADH dehydrogenase module of mitochondrial complex I

Article Abstract:

The study identified homologues in Trichomonas vaginalis of the mitichondrial 51-kDa and 24-kDa subunits of the catalytic flavoprotein component of mitochondrial complex I. It concluded that the purified Trichomonas enzyme can reduce a variety of electron carriers including ubiquinone, but unlike the mitochondrial enzyme it can also reduce ferrodoxin, the electron carrier used for hydrogen production.

Pro-survival effects of PINK1

Article Abstract:

Researchers have tried to analyze the mechanism behind the familial form of Parkinson's disease that is linked with mutations in the PINK1 gene. By implicating PINK1 in an anti-apoprotic mechanism within Mitochondria, this protein can become a potential therapeutic target for Parkinson's disease.
