Accident fall-out threatens Japan's nuclear company

Article Abstract:

Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) of Japan, may have to undergo drastic reform following accidents at nuclear facilities and falsified reports. Reports about a fire and explosion at a bitumenization facility for low level radioactive waste were falsified, and the Science and Technology Agency (STA), which oversees PNC, has filed a criminal complaint against both PNC and the officials concerned. PNC also took 30 hours to report a leak of water and tritium gas at another of its facilities, and similar leaks also previously occurred. Prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto is not convinced about total privatization of the organization, and the STA has set up a PNC reform committee to discuss the possibilities.

Postdoctoral positions galore in Japan

Article Abstract:

A law passed in Japan in 1995 requires the government to increase the opportunities for postdoctoral research by offering domestic postdoctoral fellowships to about 10,000 Japanese scientists by the year 2000. The five-year plan aims at promoting science and technology through a 50% increase in the available funding and number of technical support staff. This can be achieved through the Japan Society for Promotion of Science and the Science and Technology Agency, which were implemented in the 1980s and offer fellowships to researchers all over the world.

Waste shipment stirs debate over lack of nuclear store

Article Abstract:

A high-level radioactive nuclear waste shipment of Japan from France brings to focus the lack of a permanent site in Japan to store these materials. Despite environmentalists' protests, high-level waste from reprocessed Japanese nuclear fuel will be returned to Japan by British ship 'Pacific Pintail' from nuclear plants in France and the UK. The waste brought to Japan will be stored temporarily in a storage facility at Rokkasho village in Honshu, Japan.
