Activation of peripheral CB1 cannabinoid receptors in haemorrhagic shock

Article Abstract:

Research suggests that haemorrhagic hypotension is caused in part by activation of peripheral CB1 cannabinoid receptors, with mediation possibly conducted by the anandamide made by macrophages. The endogenous cannabinoid ligand anandamide binds in the brain to CB1 cannabinoid receptors and mimics marijuana's neurobehavioural actions. Studies with rats show blood pressure is increased by the selective CB1 receptor antagonist SR141716A following haemorrhagic shock, while blood pressure is unaffected following intracerebroventricular administration or during similar treatment of normotensive rats.

Walking on Mars

Article Abstract:

It is possible that in the future humans may walk on Mars where gravity reduction means that the mechanism of walking must be different from that used on Earth. The mechanics of walking on Mars are investigated on an aircraft undergoing parabolic flight. It is suggested that the optimal walking speed will be around half that on Earth, although locomotion may be smoother and energy expenditure less on Mars.
