Distinct functions for the two importin subunits in nuclear protein import

Article Abstract:

The mechanism of nuclear protein import involves a nuclear pore targeting complex containing both subunits importin-alpha and importin-beta which docks as a single entity to the central part of the nuclear pore. Only after the initial docking is the complex disassembled into importin-alpha, importin-beta and nuclear localization signals. It is the importin-beta subunit that is primarily responsible for making direct contact and binding with the nuclear pore complex, which it does with or without importin-alpha.

Exciting times at the interface with other disciplines

Article Abstract:

There is growing emphasis on multidisciplinary research in higher education in the UK, the US and other countries. A survey undertaken in the UK indicates that most researchers are involved in both single discipline and interdisciplinary research. Of these, 23% feel that the research assessment exercise presents a significant barrier to interdisciplinary research. In the US, a number of universities have already recognized the intellectual value of encouraging collaboration between physics and biology.

PDBBrowse - a graphics interface to the Brookhaven Protein Data Bank

Article Abstract:

The Protein Data Bank's (PDB) three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules such as proteins are searched by utilizing the Brookhaven PDB supplemented by an X-windows-based interactive browser. In the browser, users insert search strings in one or more data fields relating to the various record types in the header portion of PDB entries. The modular pattern of the browser permits each of the components to be independent.
