Young scientists deserve better of the system (yet again)

Article Abstract:

A report from the US National Research Council (NRC) looks at the problems faced by young life scientists in the US where most advertised permanent positions are over-subscribed. The report's messages voice the problems of dissatisfaction due to over-optimistic career expectations, the need for better information on the problems of postdoctoral employment and the high numbers of immigrant researchers in the US. It is sceptical of the concept that those with PhDs or postdoctoral experience have easy career alternatives outside science, and it calls for a halt in the expansion of PhD programmes.

Ol' man river again

Article Abstract:

The Mississippi and Missouri river floods are caused by the same factors that make the region so fertile: the American Midwest is huge and geologically immature. It was shaped by glaciers that retreated only 8,000 years ago. The evolving nature of the rivers is clear from how they are now changing course and bed in places. The US has actually handled the situation well, but the real challenge lies in deciding what changes to make before the next flood.

Making nuclear power usable again

Article Abstract:

There is a strong case for the revival of nuclear power generation to meet the power needs of the future. As the availability of fossil fuel gets limited and the restriction on the quantity that can be burned gets stricter, nuclear power remains the only viable alternative. To avoid the Chernobyl kind of nuclear disaster, nuclear plants should be supervised internationally and plutonium be stored in common repositories.
