After fifty years, a mixed verdict

Article Abstract:

The impact of science on progress was recognized for the first time after its contribution in defeating the enemy in World War II. Science's role in the advancement of the post-war world is significant and this began with reconstruction. Subsequent advances in areas such as materials research, information technology, and biotechnology form the foundation of modern economies. However, the future will witness a change in this trend with governments more keen to use their science bases for defense purposes than for basic scientific research.

Perception's shadow: Long-distance synchronization of human brain activity

Article Abstract:

Gamma oscillations in humans have been described in both the scalp and in intracortical recordings, although the direct participation of synchrony in a cognitive task has not been demonstrated. Electrical brain activity of subjects viewing ambiguous visual stimuli were recorded, and it was found that only face perception induces a long-distance synchronization pattern, linked to the moment of perception. Desynchronization marks the transition and this may reflect active uncoupling of the underlying neural ensembles.

Fifty years in the shadow of the bomb

Article Abstract:

A policy of openness in nuclear capability and deployment is better for world peace than veiled secrecy. Nuclear powers have restrained themselves from using nuclear bombs after their first use because the powers that possess these bombs have followed a policy of only retalitory use caused by the awareness that any use will result in unacceptable damage. Political leaders need to remember Nagasaki and Hiroshima to keep support for non-use strong.
