Competition induces adaptive shifts in caste ratios of a polyembryonic wasp

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the caste ratio alterations made by the polyembryonic wasp Copidosoma floridanum when interspecific competition intensifies. The trade-off between defence and reproduction is discussed.

Sibling rivalry and brood sex ratios in polyembryonic wasps

Article Abstract:

Precocious larvae of parasitoid Hymenoptera wasps attack and kill other parasitoid eggs and larvae within the host. The two previous explanations offered for this behavior are too simple. The wasps oviposit into insect eggs such as moths but the larvae do not begin to consume the host until it matures. One or two eggs are laid but when two are laid one must be female. The precocious larvae are always female and destroy their brothers. A female-biased sex ratio results which may be explained by appeal to gene-pool constitution and mating opportunities.

Aggression by polyembryonic wasp soldiers correlates with kinship but not resource competition

Article Abstract:

Polyembryonic wasps have eggs that undergo colonal division to produce large broods. When these broods were observed, it was found that aggression is inversely related to the genetic relatedness of competitors.
