Albert B. Sabin, 1906-1993

Article Abstract:

A summary of the achievements of the eminent virologist Albert B. Sabin, who died in 1993, is presented. Sabin had been interested in the development of a polio vaccine even before he obtained his MD degree from New York University in 1931. He was instrumental in the development of the oral polio vaccine, which he promoted around the world practically until the end of his life. At various points in his life, Sabin also worked on the herpes B virus, the virus of sandfly fever and vaccines against dengue fever and Japanese B encephalitis. More recently, he had indicated an important direction for research on AIDS vaccines.
