Amphibious communication with sound in hippos, Hippopotamus amphibius

Article Abstract:

The study reported that hippos make sounds both in air and underwater, and with their heads in an amphibious position, are able to transmit sounds to both media simultaneously. Hippos in the amphibious position respond to playback of underwater hippo screams that are inaudible in air, and also to natural underwater calls, suggesting that they can hear in air and water simultaneously.

Interspecific responses to distress calls in bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae): a function for convergence in call design?

Article Abstract:

The response derived from the playback experiments consisting of experimental distress that call sequences from each species and control sequences of random noise is presented. The response was measured by simultaneously recording ultrasound during playbacks and counting the echolocation pulses above a predetermined threshold that was then identified to species.

Detection and discrimination of natural calls in masking noise by birds: estimating the active space of a signal

Article Abstract:

The ability of birds to detect and discriminate natural vocal signals in the presence of masking noise using operant conditioning is tested. A simple model for estimating likely detection and discrimination distances for the signals tested is provided.
