An exceptionally widespread ignimbrite with implications for pyroclastic flow emplacement

Article Abstract:

Prehistoric ignimbrites which erupted from the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand are the most widely-spread ignimbrites that have been studied. These ignimbrites, which may have reached over 385 km across the site of eruption, offer a basis for determining the distances reached by pyroclastics during volcanic eruptions. Information about their distribution show that the coupling of high initial flow velocities with large mass fluxes aids the mobility of ignimbrites.

Estimate of pyroclastic flow velocities resulting from explosive decompression of lava domes

Article Abstract:

Volcanic block-and-ash flows often threaten a much greater area than even experts realize. Volatile gases under pressure can cause pyroclastic flow velocities comparable to those produced by gravitational collapse, expanding the threat zone of a flow. The release of pressure when the front of a lava dome falls off allows interior gasses to decompress explosively, sending the gassy parts of the flow well beyond where gravity would carry them.

Spectroscopic evidence for a lava fountain driven by previously accumulated magmatic gas

Article Abstract:

An analysis of magmatic gas during a powerful (250-600m high) lava fountain, measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy on mount Etna, Sicily, is reported. The composition suggests violent emptying of a gas bubble layer previously accumulated at about 1.5 km depth below the erupting crater.
