Assessing the Risk of Introducing Exotic Species via the Live Marine Species Trade

Article Abstract:

Seven mechanisms of species transfer are investigated for their contributions to non-native species invasions in the Massachusetts coastal region, including coastal restoration projects, seafood companies, bait shops, and public aquariums. No sole mechanism was found to be a primary risk, suggesting that conservation efforts should be tailored to respond appropriately to each mechanism.

Effects of Desertification Caused by Lithophaga lithophaga (Mollusca) Fishery on Littoral Fish Assemblages along Rocky Coasts of Southeastern Italy

Article Abstract:

Research on rocky, shallow reefs in the Mediterranean Sea shows that date mussel fishery negatively impacts fish assemblages, primarily via reduction of arborescent macroalgae that fosters primary production and habitat complexity. Stronger enforcement of conservation efforts is recommended.

Effects of Noncompliance on the Success of Alternative Designs of Marine Protected-Area Networks for Conservation and Fisheries Management

Article Abstract:

A spatially structured model is used to assess the impact of noncompliance on several small marine protected areas (MPAs) and one large marine protected area. The smaller MPAs were found to be more vulnerable to noncompliance; implications are discussed.
