Auditory matching of male Epipedobates femoralis (Anura: Dendrobatidae) under field conditions

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to show that spectral matching curves are shaped in a way that better serves the communication between conspecific males of the dart-poison frog, Epipedobates femoralis, and that both spectral and temporal features of auditory signals are used for recognition of conspecifics. The results suggest that under field conditions frequency tuning interacts with temporal call features in maximizing the detection of conspecific signals and reducing the probability of heterospecific interference.

Synchronized interdigitated calling in the Kuvangu running frog, Kassina kuvangensis

Article Abstract:

Results of the recording of pairwise interactions between males are presented that showed that calls were highly synchronized with individual calls interdigitating with each other. It was found that males frequently switched between the leader and follower role with neither male domination the interaction.
