Avian nesting success in a selectively harvested north temperate deciduous forest

Article Abstract:

The effect of internal edges created by timber harvest in Trail of Tears, a deciduous forest in southern Illinois was studied and the nesting-success and brood-parasitism rates of four song-bird species were measured. The results show that selective logging added little to existing fragmentation effects in this landscape in which levels of nest predation and brood parasitism are chronically high.

Effects of selective logging on forest bird populations in a fragmented landscape

Article Abstract:

Selective logging creates a small gap in mature forest, and has been implemented to prevent harm to bird populations through destruction of their habitat. A study of uncut forest compared with forest compartments that were recently logged showed most species of forest birds were not significantly less common in logged tracts.

Long-term changes in the avifauna of Barro Colorado Island, Panama, a tropical forest isolate

Article Abstract:

Barro Colorado Island in Panama has seen the extinction of 65 bird species in the 20th century. The island is often used as a model for studying the loss of species over time. Studies of birds on the island between 1984 and 1986 showed no sign of 36 species that were present during the 1970s.
