The Dept of Agriculture is responding to BSE with press releases rather than taking meaningful action. In Britain a mad cow disease inquirey panel found that the government took no action to protect consumers frompotentially tainted products.

Over 50 blood donors were rejected in Tucson, Arizona, for fear of CJD as they had spent at least 6 months in Britain in the last 20 years. Over 50 people have died as a result of the new variant CJD outbreak in Britain.

The decision by the UK in Nov 1998 to destroy all of its blood plasma products due to concerns regarding bovine spongiform encephalopathy contamination has resulted in a move to replenish the nation's blood supply from foreign sources. Several CJD victims were known blood donors.
