Emissions targets "unrealistic" says US climate change body

Article Abstract:

The Pew Center on Global Climate Change in the United States has angered its usual supporters by saying that targets set for reducing emissions are unattainable. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol set the targets to be achieved by 2008 to 2012.

Science seeks weapons clean-up role

Article Abstract:

The US is currently engaged in a massive environmental remediation effort aimed at cleaning up decades of contamination at nuclear weapons plants. Many scientists believe, however, that the approaches and technologies adopted so far by the program's managers are technically flawed and unrealistic. They believe that more effort should be focused on basic research, with the goal of developing new and more effective remediation technologies.

US target 'likely to equal 1990 emissions'

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton's assertion that the US will take a moderate approach to reducing emissions is likely to disappoint environmentalists in the run-up to the Kyoto climate conference in December 1997. The US's likely target is a reduction in emissions to 1990 levels by 2010. The president is against direct taxation on fuel and favours other options, such as improving consumer awareness of energy issues and a reduction in price for 'clean' energy.
