Battery fault ends X-ray satellite mission

Article Abstract:

Ground contact with the small German-built X-ray satellite Abrixas was lost two days after its launch from Russia following battery failure. It seems that at least one of the satellite's 11 battery cells was burnt out by inappropriate power input from batteries used as part of the launch. It will probably not be possible to restore the battery system. Some observers have expressed reservations about the risk associated with small, rapid science missions.

Quest for SARS source gathers pace in bid to thwart resurgence

Article Abstract:

Some species of wild animals sold in the markets of the Guangdong province of southern China are described to lead the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). These animals are subject to tests based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which shows small stretches of genetic material from the SARS virus and allows them to be detected.
