Berlin universities jockey for position after unification

Article Abstract:

The three largest universities in Berlin, Germany, have become engaged in a competition for funding, students and courses following the reunification of Germany. Berlin has already used a large portion of its budget for higher education while reintegrating research into former eastern university systems. The Wissenschaftsrat's decision to raise the standards of the Humboldt University to the level of western institutions further depleted the budget shared by the Free University and the Technical University. Other problems faced by these institutions concern the coordination of courses, which would require the closure, creation or combination of departments.

What future for Europe's universities?

Article Abstract:

The Maastricht Treaty for European Union, by giving the EC authority to regulate higher education, may destabilize Europe's universities and colleges by rolling back the trend toward increased local control. Although the goal of making the universities more cosmopolitan is laudable, several problems may arise if the Treaty is approved such as how to standardize the employment of academics. The EC could improve its education policy by establishing a system for providing grants to universities that place themselves at the forefront of international research and academic reform.

Towards a European university system

Article Abstract:

A centralized university system helps in maintaining a common standard for selecting students and makes the staff more cosmopolitan in nature. The European Commission should plan a coherent European policy for higher education that would be beneficial to Europe. The centralized university system, despite some drawbacks, offers a solution to the needs of the European Community.
