Between cows and monkeys

Article Abstract:

Intracerebral inoculation of macaque monkeys with brain extracts from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)-infected cattle reinforces the possible link between BSE and variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). The inoculation resulted in a brain disease with plaques resembling the florid plaques of vCJD patients. However, no plaques were observed in macaques inoculated with human CJD. The inoculation caused severe cerebellar damage and a voracious appetite syndrome. The BSE agent seems to easily infect animals of other species through oral transmission.

Cannibals and garbage piles

Article Abstract:

The prion hypothesis is challenged and the details of prion diseases are explored in detail. The views and disagreements among scientists about physiological function of the normal prion protein (PrP C) and the role of its aberrant form (PrP Sc) in disease are focused on.
