Beyond Species Richness: Community Similarity as a Measure of Cross-Taxon Congruence for Coarse-Filter Conservation

Article Abstract:

Research on vascular plant, butterfly, and bird communities in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem suggests that surrogate taxon success is dependent on the technique utilized to evaluate surrogacy and the particular approach used for conservation planning. Coarse-filter conservation may be less dependent on species richness than on measures of community similarity.

Effect of experimental selective logging on tropical butterflies

Article Abstract:

The effect of experimental selective logging on tropical fruit-feeding butterflies in Belize is discussed. Taxa with restricted geographical ranges did not appear to be particularly sensitive to selective logging. The species seen seem to be adapted to naturally disturbed habitats.

Conservation value of roadside prairie restoration to butterfly communities

Article Abstract:

Roadside prairie vegetation restoration in Iowa and its conservation value to butterfly communities are discussed. The butterfly populations were benefited. The roadsides have the potential to serve as corridors.
