Endangered species constrained by natural and human factors: the case of brown bears in northern Spain

Article Abstract:

Two spatial long-term data sets and a geographic information system were used to determine presence and reproduction in two brown bear populations in Spain's Cantabrian Mountains. Different suboptimal conditions were found for the two populations: one has poor natural habitat but little human impact; the other has good natural habitat but high human impact. Extinction probabilities are calculated for both scenarios.

Inbreeding depression in the Speke's gazelle captive breeding program

Article Abstract:

The Speke's gazelle captive breeding program for captive breeding of endangered species is analyzed. The analysis shows that the decrease in inbreeding depression is not consistent with any model of genetic improvement in the herd. Inbreeding depression may be more sensitive to environmental influences than is usually thought.

Stress resistance and environmental dependency of inbreeding depression in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

Inbreeding and environmental stress affect the conservation of endangered species like Drosophila melanogaster adversely. Inbreeding within a specific environment and selection for resistant genotypes may purge a population of deleterious genes specific to only environmental stress.
