Bicalyx is a natural homeotic floral variant

Article Abstract:

Bicalyx has been identified as a naturally developed homeotic variant of the wild flower Clarkia concinna (C. concinna) found at Point Reyes, CA. Bicalyx differs morphologically from C. concinna in several ways such as having eight sepals rather than four. Bicalyx's existence shows that a simple genetic mutation can bring about a large degree of morphological alteration and that the homeotic genes influence the evolutionary diversification of plants.

Floral mimicry by a plant pathogen

Article Abstract:

The rust fungus Puccinia monoica alters the shape of the host plant species Arabis holboellii to produce pseudoflowers. These pseudoflowers entice bees, butterflies, flies and other insects which fertilize the rust by spreading its spermatial fluid from one false flower to another. By drawing the insects away from the real flowers of other plants, the rust can disrupt the reproduction of plants growing near the host plant.
