Breakup and conditions for stability of the northern Larsen Ice Shelf, Antarctica

Article Abstract:

There has been a breakup of ice shelves in Antarctica with a rise in the fracturing process and summer melt, and this has been linked to regional warming. Rapid disintegration of shelves can occur, as happened in the northern part of the Larsen Ice Shelf in 1995, once a critical limit has been reached. The history of breakups in this region has been examined from 1986 and 1997, using a numerical model based on finite-elements. Stability criteria emerges for ice shelves from this analysis.

Recent atmospheric warming and retreat of ice shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula

Article Abstract:

Time-series of observations of nine ice shelves in the Antarctic Region are examined for signs of the impact of atmospheric warming and of the retreat of ice shelves since the 1940s. Data show that five of the ice shelves located in the northern portion of the peninsula have receded considerably in the last five decades. Analysis of the data suggests that ice shelves can be used to predict changes in climate.

Timing is everything in a game of two hemispheres

Article Abstract:

A new study of ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica appear to show that climate changes, such as rapid warming, may have their origins in the Southern Hemisphere. The large and rapid swings in methane concentrations in the atmosphere during the last ice age between 12,000 and 50,000 years ago are used to show small temperature rises in Antarctica precede similar warmings in Greenland by over 1,000 years.
