Territorial intrusions and copulation patterns in red kites, Milvus milvus, in relation to breeding density

Article Abstract:

The prelaying behavior of red kits, where the males courtship feed, was investigated, and pair behaviour was examined. Males' paternity certainty was likely to fall with rising breeding density. The results support the concept of paternity assurance via frequent copulations during the fertile period of the female.

Breeding density, cuckoldry risk and copulation behaviour during the fertile period in raptors: a comparative analysis

Article Abstract:

Extrapair copulations (EPCs) and fertilizations (EPFs) occur in many socially monogamous bird species including raptors in which males invest heavily in reproduction and so the cost of cuckoldry is particularly high. The information on copulation behavior of diurnal raptors and use of regression analyses and phylogenetic comparative analyses to investigate relation between density, EPC frequency and withing pair copulations (WPC) behavior is reviewed.

Paternity assurance responses to first-year and adult male territorial intrusions in a courtship-feeding raptor

Article Abstract:

Circus pygargus (Montagu's harrier) males were found to alter their paternity assurance behavior in response to different levels of perceived risk, such as intrusion by either first-year males, by adult males, or the presence or absence of prey.
